Riding Your eBike or eScooter in Winter: A Practical Guide

Winter Riding Is Possible With the Right Preparation

Cold weather doesn’t have to mean putting your electric bike or scooter away until spring. With a few adjustments, many riders continue commuting comfortably and safely through the colder months.

Battery Performance in Cold Temperatures

Lithium batteries lose some capacity in cold weather, so expect a shorter range on freezing days compared to summer. Bringing the battery indoors overnight, rather than leaving it outside in the cold, helps preserve both range and long-term battery health.

Tire Pressure and Traction

Slightly lower tire pressure can improve grip on cold, wet, or icy surfaces by increasing the contact patch with the road. If you regularly ride in snow or ice, wider tires with more aggressive tread offer meaningfully better traction and control.

Visibility and Lighting

Winter days are shorter, and wet roads reduce visibility further. Make sure your lights are fully functional, consider reflective clothing or accessories, and check that your bike’s reflectors are clean and unobstructed.

Dressing for the Ride

Layered clothing that blocks wind while allowing some breathability keeps you comfortable without overheating during exertion. Waterproof gloves and shoe covers make a noticeable difference on wet or snowy commutes.

Braking and Riding Style

Wet and icy conditions require more cautious braking and cornering. Slow down earlier than usual, avoid sudden direction changes, and give yourself extra stopping distance, especially with disc brakes that can behave differently in freezing temperatures.
